"High
Chief" Peter Maivia was born in Western Samoa. He moved to New Zealand for a
period of time to learn the craft
of Pro Wrestling. From there, the "High Chief" decided it was time to move to
the United States for a new challenge with the countless wrestling territories
that were on fire at that point. The 100% Samoan moved his wife Lia and lovely
daughter Ata to the United States where he began his successful wrestling
career. Along the way, Maivia started the tradition of being the best of the
best in Pro Wrestling that his Samoan family would continue for the rest of
the century, and undoubtedly into the next millennium. Many note that Maivia
hit his prime as a perennial champion in the San Francisco area with partners
that included Rocky Johnson, who later became his son in law, Pat Patterson,
and Paul DeMarco. Besides his very successful tenure in San Francisco, the
"High Chief" achieved numerous accomplishments in the World Wrestling
Federation headlining shows at Madison Square Garden and countless other
venues. In the early 70's Peter Maivia decided it was time to pass the torch
down to one of his family members, he chose his nephew Afa, who continued in
Peter's Footsteps. In addition to his great wrestling accomplishments, Maivia
was also a very popular television and movie star with numerous appearances
on many programs. But he is best noted for his epic performance in the James
Bond
movie You Only Live Twice, where he portrayed a villain and battled
it out with the savvy British secret service agent. Unfortunately, in 1983,
Peter Maivia died after a long battle with cancer in Hawaii. Although a very
sad moment in the Samoan clan's history, he set the groundwork for a destiny
which would come to be with the continuation of pro wrestling excellence and
domination with Afa, Sika, Samu, and many other members of the family...
including Peter's own grandson- "the Rock" Rocky Maivia and his son, Toa
Maivia. The "High Chief" may no longer be with us all, but he is indeed
looking down and smiling knowing that his family is making him proud with
achievements in Pro Wrestling from capturing championship gold to training the
stars of tomorrow.
